collector lane
DCHP-2 (Oct 2012)
n. — Ontario, Transportation
a road running parallel to the express lanes of a highway, funneling traffic onto and from the main lanes (see Image 1).
Type: 2. Preservation — Although the term is found earlier in the US than in Canada (DARE has "collector highway" with a 1969 quotation), it was adopted quickly here. Collector lane is more frequently used in Canada than the US (Chart 1); the Canadian quotations are generally from Ontario, which is where most of the multi-lane highways in the country are located (Chart 2).
